Is your dog constantly scratching, biting, and licking at their skin? Do they get frequent ear or skin infections? Are they coughing, wheezing, or having difficulty breathing after their walks?
These symptoms can all be signs of allergies. Yes, dogs can get allergies, too, and they can cause all sorts of side effects. That is why managing your pet’s allergies is a must. Here are some of our best tips on how to care for a dog with allergies, so you can keep them happy and healthy.
Tip 1: Talk with your veterinarian.
Your veterinarian can help you manage your pet’s allergies in several ways:
- Check that allergies are not getting worse
- Help you monitor their skin for infections
- Help you monitor for ear infections
- Provide medication suggestions or prescriptions
Tip 2: Take extra care in your housecleaning.
If your pet has an environmental allergy, like dust or pollen, taking a few extra steps when you’re cleaning can help. For instance:
- Washing bedding more often (your dog’s and your own)
- Cleaning home filters every month to reduce pollens and dust blowing through vents
- Sweeping or vacuuming once a day to remove allergens from the floor
- Placing an air purifier in the areas where your dog spends the most time
- Buying pet-friendly household cleaners
Tip 3: Check the labels.
Unfortunately, food allergens can hide in anything your pet eats or licks off of their paws. Making sure to check the labels on food, treats, and topical products will prevent you from exposing your pet to their allergens.
Always read the ingredients on:
- Treats
- Canned food
- Kibble
- Shampoo
- Paw wipes
Tip 4: Change your routine.
Pollen and other outdoor allergens can be stronger at different times of the day. Paying close attention to your dog during their daily walks and for a little while afterward can help you find the best times of day for exercise. If your pet is having difficulty breathing due to allergies, you should bring them to see a vet. There are medications that may help.
Tip 5: Let everyone know.
Anyone who interacts with your pet should be made aware of their allergies. Dog sitters, groomers, your neighbor, people who frequent your home, and even the mail carrier if they like to give out treats. This step is especially important for dogs with food allergies.
