Autumn in Arizona is when the weather finally cools down enough to really enjoy the outdoors. From patios and porches to community festivals, fall brings a lot of great opportunities for your four-legged family members to get out and socialize. But although pet-friendly settings are fun, the crowds, noise, heat, and new smells can stress out even the calmest pet. If you’re planning to visit Barktoberfest in Gilbert, here are some important safety tips to keep in mind.

Barktoberfest in Gilbert

For nearly 30 years, Barktoberfest has welcomed dogs and their families for fun and socialization. This year, the event benefits Friends for Life pet shelter.

In addition to dozens of vendors for you to shop from, there are plenty of attractions for pets as well. Dogs can enjoy splash pads, agility courses, and more! Be ready to participate in contests with your pet, or just cast your vote for the winners of the Barktoberfest Scavenger Hunt or Best Costume.

Even if all you do is get some snacks from a food truck or walk around and sniff things, Barktobfest offers you and your dog a great chance to bond through social activity and exercise. You can also meet other pet owners and their dogs to expand your circle.

But before you head out to a public event, ask yourself the following questions:

  • Is your dog comfortable around strangers, kids, and other dogs?
  • Can your dog walk calmly on a leash?
  • Is your dog not easily startled by loud noises?
  • Are your dog’s vaccines up to date?

Tips for Attending Pet-Friendly Events

  • Before you go, feed your dog a normal meal, and avoid giving them new foods or treats on that day.
  • Always check the forecast before heading out, so you can arrive early or later to enjoy cooler temperatures. Keep an eye out for shady spots where your pet can rest and have some water. And make sure you know how to recognize the signs of heatstroke: heavy panting, drooling, weakness, vomiting, or collapse.
  • Before attending any pet-friendly event, check out the leash requirements. Keep your dog on a short leash, and ask before letting dogs greet each other; not all pets might be as easygoing as yours.
  • Watch for signs of stress like lip licking, a tucked tail or hiding. If your pet seems anxious, aggressive, or scared at any time, take them home so they’ll feel safe again.
  • Make sure your dog has an ID tag on their collar, and if they’re microchipped, check the database to make sure it has your current contact information.
  • It’s also a good idea to check in with your vet to make sure your dog is up-to-date on their vaccine boosters and flea and tick prevention, since your dog will be in close contact with other dogs.
  • Take plenty of breaks in a quiet, shaded spot to allow your dog to rest and recharge.
  • And before you leave, check their paws for grass seeds, goathead thorns and cactus spines.

What to bring with you to Barktoberfest:

  • A sturdy, 4-foot leash
  • A collapsible water bowl and bottled water
  • Poop bags
  • Portable shade canopy or cooling mat
  • Your dog’s favorite treats
  • A costume!

Skip any costumes that might cause discomfort or overheating, as well as any that restrict your pet’s movement or cover their face.
