New laws governing the use of cannabis in many states have brought the health benefits of the hemp plant to light. One of its most beneficial compounds is CBD (cannabidiol oil). CBD has been touted as the cure for a variety of ailments in both people and pets. While more studies need to be done on the long-term effects of CBD for pets, short term studies tell us there are some benefits.

We know you have questions, so let us answer a few!

Is CBD Safe for Pets?

Yes! CBD extract is considered safe for pets, and it has many of the same benefits for them as it does for humans. Normally sold as a liquid or an oil, it can be made into a variety of products that are fit for your pet’s consumption. There are infused treats, liquids you can add to water, pills, or oils to be added to food or used topically.

Some concerns over CBD and pets have to do with the purity of the derived CBD. Although it is derived from the same plant, CBD extracts do not contain any THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), the psychoactive ingredient that produces a high.

However, it is important to choose a CBD product that has been third-party tested for purity, in order to ensure that there is no THC in the product. The THC compound is not safe for your pet’s consumption, and can cause a plethora of health problems. If your pet is showing signs of THC poisoning it may be an emergency, so it is important to contact your veterinarian right away.

Signs of THC Poisoning in Pets:

  • Inactivity
  • Incoordination
  • Increased sensitivity to motions, sounds, touches
  • Urinary incontinence
  • Slow heart rate
  • Aggression
  • Slow breathing
  • Low blood pressure
  • Seizures

What Conditions Can CBD Treat?

CBD for pets has been used to treat a variety of different problems, from anxiety to seizures. CBD can be used for:

  • Anxiety
  • Stress
  • Pain relief
  • Inflammatory problems
  • Nausea reduction
  • Appetite stimulation
  • Seizures

How Does CBD Affect Cats and Dogs?

While there are still many studies in progress about the effects of CBD on pets, most of the anecdotal evidence suggests that there are very few side effects. Both cats and dogs can absorb the active ingredients in CBD that help to maintain balance within the nervous system.

Side effects are rare, but can include drowsiness, dry mouth, diarrhea, and lowered blood pressure. Dosing and interactions with current medications are also a concern. Be sure to chat with your veterinarian before starting any new supplement, especially one that contains CBD.
